Summer Pool Safety

Summer is right around the corner. The days are starting to get longer and the temperature is rising. It will not be long before your swimming pool becomes a very popular destination and reprieve from the heat.

The fun and enjoyment that swimming pools bring to us in the summer is a welcome alternative to the 100 plus degree temperatures that relentlessly bake the valley. Fun in the sun also brings additional responsibility and a focus on safety.

Sadly, every year there are stories of children drowning in pools. While there are many different factors surrounding each of the tragedies, the one commonality is that they are always preventable. Whether it is human neglect or equipment failure, the prevention of a child drowning should be a major focus of every swimming pool owner.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission(CPSC), has put together a Website, http://www.poolsafely.gov, to provide swimming pool owners with great resources to help identify possible safety concerns. The poolsafety.gov website offers many resources for not only swimming pool owners and or parents, but it is also for public swimming pool safety too. There is a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section as well questionnaires, videos and many other resources for everyone’s benefit. The site also has fun games for kids to play that help instruct them on different aspects of swimming pool safety.

Child safety and drowning prevention is everyone’s responsibility, and no matter the reason, any time there is a failure to properly maintain a safe swimming experience, the children are the ones to suffer most. The CPSC, reports that on average 390 children ages 0-14 die every year from swimming pool accidents, with more than 5,000 visits to the emergency room as well.

This swim season, let’s all do our part to protect those who need it the most and allow for a fun and enjoyable summer for everyone.
