6 bathing suits every pool owner’s wardrobe needs

If you live in a place that gets ample sunshine year round – say, San Diego – then you probably own a swimming pool. Is there any other way to properly cool off after a long day at the office? Not one that's worth mentioning. From working out to social soirees, that backyard body of water serves many purposes, and for that you must always dress for the occasion. It's all about the bathing suits, so here are six of them every swimming pool owner's wardrobe needs.

1. The vintage suit
You must've seen this before in your favorite black-and-white movie. It's as classic as the "girl meets boy" plot, which is why you must have it. From the high waisted shorts and the adorable halter tops, this bathing suit not only flatters the majority of people who wear it, but it also won't fall off when you run and jump from the diving board. Put in your hot rollers and tie on a headband to complete the look.

2. The onesie
Sure, this suit takes a lot of flak for being the "mom" of all bathing suits, but it's come a long way since the 50s. If you don't want to hear it, just remember how great Farrah Fawcett looked in her little red one piece. Aim for that style and you'll avoid a swimsuit that's frumpy and awkward.

3. The hot little number
You know this one. You likely wore it when you visited Ibiza, Cabo or Cancun for spring break. The sexy two piece has it's time and place – unless you're lucky enough to head back to those college days. At any rate, everyone needs an itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini, and not just because that song is so catchy. It's because there may come a time when you'll want to get some color for a friend's wedding, and tan lines are your worst enemy. That's where this swim attire comes into play.

4. The really expensive one
For small bits of fabric, it can be tough to pay hand over fist for a bathing suit. But you're going to need one that's the equivalent of a ball gown if you plan to host elaborate pool parties and dress to impress. Splurge on this swimsuit, but just make sure the material is strong enough to take some chlorine and sunshine without falling apart. You'll likely know when you come across this particular model, because the store itself will have the words "bathing suit", or "swim", in its name. Treat yourself to a fancy coffee drink from your favorite cafe and hit the outlets to fine "the one."

5. The tankini
While it's no secret the tankini hit it's prime back in the early 2000s, this swimsuit option is still an important part of your wardrobe. It can be used to cover a badly burned belly. It also makes for a more conservative option if you're having your grandparents over for a swim. Not to mention, there really are some adorable tankini options, like at Bergdorf Goodman.

6. The one that's in rags
Everyone needs at least one swimsuit that they don't give a hoot about. Why's that? Because you're going to play on a slip-n-slide, run a road race where you'll get muddied and dirty, or partake in some other activity that requires clothing you can destroy. The best part about this one is you don't have to go out and buy it. Just dig through last year's selection. You could even get away with recycling your 9th grade swimsuit, so long as it fits.
